Elles sont capables d'affronter les difficultés et les malheurs de la Première Guerre mondiale, en collaborant fraternellement pour soutenir leurs fidèles dans les souffrances. En 1919, elles jugent qu'elles ont été capables de résister aux malheurs de la guerre mais elles craignent un mal plus ancien qui les prive localement de la vie, «la dépopulation» à laquelle échappe l'industrielle Alès. In August 1914, the Gard region of the Cévennes mountains was peopled by a substantial Protestant minority, in which the various strands of French Protestantism were present. They were strong enough to face the difficulties and misfortunes caused by World War I, by giving fraternal support to the faithful in this painful ordeal. In 1919, they believed they were able to overcome the miseries of war but they dreaded another evil of longer standing which locally was detrimental to life, namely depopulation, an evil to which the industrial city of Alès was not subject. Im August 1914 waren die nach Süden hin abfallenden Höhenzüge der Cevennen ein Landstrich, der eine bedeutende protestantische Minderheit aus den unterschiedlichen Kirchen des französischen Protestantismus beherbergte. Diese erwiesen sich als stark genug, den gemeinsamen Schwierigkeiten und Schicksalsschlägen der Großen Krieges zu trotzen, indem sie in brüderlichem Geiste zusammenhielten, um das Leid ihrer Gläubigen zu lindern. 1919 zogen sie den Schluß, daß sie sehr wohl dazu im Stande gewesen waren, das Unglück des Krieges zu meistern, nun jedoch einem viel älteren Übel gegenüber standen, das ihr lokales Leben gefährdete: die allgemeine Abwanderung der Bevölkerung, von der lediglich die Industriestadt Alès verschont blieb. | ||
