Calvin n'exalte pas le martyre en soi mais exhorte les fidèles à ne pas renier leur foi. Ses lettres aux condamnés et aux Églises de moins en moins clandestines et de plus en plus tentées par la résistance violente opposent au réflexe d'autodéfense une non-violence fondée sur Romains 13, 1 et Hébreux 11-12, dont il voit cependant les limites. C'est au test de la persécution, étendu à toutes les situations de détresse, que se révèle la spiritualité qui culmine avec ses sermons sur Job. Practising one's faith in the context of persecution implies for Calvin a total dedication, which he justifies by a literal reading of the Scripture, expounded in the second of his Four Sermons (1552). Calvin does not valorise martyrdom as such, but he appeals to believers not to deny their faith. His letters to condemned prisoners and to Churches which were becoming less and less clandestine, and more and more tempted by violent resistance, oppose to a reflex action of self-defence a teaching on non-violence based on Romans 13.1 and Hebrews 11-12, although he perceives the limitations of this teaching. His spirituality is revealed in the test of persecution, broadened to all situations of distress, and culminates in his sermons on Job. Die Ausübung des Glaubens in einer Zeit religiöser Verfolgungen bedeutet für Calvin eine absoluten Gehorsam gegenüber Gott. Dies rechtfertigt er mit einer wörtlichen Interpretation der Hlg. Schrift, wie z.B. in der zweiten Predigt der «Vier Predigten über für unsere Zeit wichtige Fragen». Calvin verherrlicht nicht an sich den Märtyrertod, aber er ermahnt die Gemeindeglieder, ihren Glauben nicht zu verleugnen. Seine Briefe an verurteilte Gefangene und die immer weniger heimlich lebenden und immer mehr vom gewaltsamem Widerstand verlockten Kirchengemeinden stellen dem Reflex der Selbstverteidigung eine Gewaltfreiheit gegenüber, die er aufgrund von Römer 13, 1 und Hebräer 11-12 entwickelt, allerdings erkennt er auch die Grenzen dieser Gewaltlosigkeit. Unter den Prüfungen der Verfolgung und ausgeweitet auf alle menschlichen Notlagen, zeigt sich die wahre innere, geistliche Haltung, was sich am deutlichsten in seinen Predigten über Hiob zeigt. | ||
