L'excommunication était au nombre des sanctions les plus redoutables, mais Calvin finit par vaincre toute opposition après 1555. More than any other major Reformer, Calvin believed strenuously in the role of ecclesiastical discipline. He participated actively in the weekly meetings of the consistory every Thursday, which took on some of the tasks of the former bishop's curia officialis, adding on the control of every day life, and actively eradicating the surviving practices of «popery». Excommunication was among the worst sanctions, but Calvin eventually overcame all opposition after 1555. Mehr als irgendeiner andere Reformator hat Calvin den Nachdruck auf die entscheidende Wichtigkeit der Kirchenzucht gelegt. In der Tat nahm er donnerstags an den Versammlungen des Genfer «Consistoire» aktiv teil, unter dessen Aufgaben neben den ehemaligen Aufträgen des bischöflichen Gerichts noch die Sittenkontrolle und der Kampf gegen die «papistischen» Reste standen.
