Il en ressort que Sully est un lecteur docile, moins attentif aux thèses métaphysiques formulées par Calvin qu'à ce qui définit un rapport juste du fidèle à la révélation biblique. Ses annotations témoignent d'un esprit peu porté sur la polémique. Elles nous permettent de saisir ce qu'a pu être une lecture modérée et moyenne de Calvin, celle d'un laïc réformé cultivé de l'époque, cherchant à s'instruire, voire à s'édifier, mais sans accent dévot, et peu soucieux de prendre parti en fonction de convictions personnelles face à des thèses radicales, qui servaient alors de marqueur confessionnel identitaire. This article seeks to characterize the manuscript notes written by Sully in his copy of Calvin's Institution de la religion chrestienne by comparing them with copies of the same work annotated by others at the same period. We have chosen as a sample the theme of providence and predestination. What emerges is that Sully is a docile reader, less attentive to Calvin's metaphysical theses than to the definition of a proper relation between the believer and biblical revelation. His notes show him to be unconcerned with polemics. They enable us to perceive a moderate, balanced reading of Calvin, that of a cultured Protestant layman of his time, seeking instruction, indeed moral edification, but without a stress on piety, and unconcerned to formulate personal opinions in relation to the radical assertions which at the time provided markers for a confessional identity. Dieser Aufsatz sucht, die handschriftlichen Aufzeichnungen, die Sully auf seinem eigenem Exemplar von Calvins Institutio geschrieben hat, im Vergleich mit weiteren zeitgenössischen annotierten Exemplaren desselben Werkes zu charakterisieren. Gewählt ist das Thema «Vorsehung und Prädestination». Sullys Aufzeichnungen zeigen einen gelehrigen Leser, der aber nicht Calvins metaphysische Thesen, sondern die richtige Stellung des Gläubigen zur biblischen Offenbarung bevorzugt. Wir haben mit einer gemässigten Lektüre zu tun, die einen gelesenen reformierten Laien dieser Zeit bezeigt. Er sucht, sich belehren, ja aufbauen zu lassen, ohne aber devoten Zug. In einem theologischen Themenbereich, der zur Zeit als konfessionnel identitätsstiftend galt, neigt Sully nicht, persönliche Überzeugungen zur Geltung zu bringen. | ||
