Attirés par une propagande qui présente ces colonies comme un véritable paradis terrestre, ces réfugiés, après un voyage transocéanique souvent pénible et parfois dangereux, trouvent dans cette Amérique un environnement pour le moins difficile. Après une description de l'Amérique britannique et du contexte du Refuge outre-Atlantique, cet article met en parallèle la vision de l'Amérique véhiculée dans les imprimés de propagande et les lettres de réfugiés, et les conditions réelles du Refuge. At the end of the seventeenth century roughly 200,000 Huguenots left France to relocate in Switzerland and throughout Northern Europe. A few thousand went further and settled in British North America, mainly in New York, South Carolina and Virginia. Drawn to America by promotional literature that presented the colonies as a paradise on earth, these refugees found in America a rather difficult environment, after an often perilous and sometimes dangerous ocean voyage. After a description of British America and the context of the transatlantic Refuge, this article seeks to juxtapose the vision of America conveyed in the promotional literature and the refugees' letters and the actual conditions of the Huguenot migration and settlement. Am Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts verliessen rund 200 000 Hugenotten Frankreich und liessen sich in der Schweiz oder in Nordeuropa nieder. Einige Tausende fuhren weiter bis in die britischen Kolonien von Amerika, hauptsächlich nach New York, South Carolina und Virginia. Durch eine Propaganda angelockt, die diese Kolonien als das wahre irdische Paradies stylisierte, fanden diese Flüchtlinge – nach einer oft anstrengenden und manchmal gefährlichen atlantischen Überfahrt – eine wahrhaft schwierige Umwelt. Der vorliegende Artikel beschreibt zuerst das britische Amerika und die Rahmenbedingungen des transatlantischen Refuge. Anschliessend betrachtet er perspektivisch die durch die Propagandaliteratur und durch Briefe von Flüchtlingen vehikulierte Vorstellung Amerikas und die realen Lebensbedingungen des Refuge. | ||
