Entre les deux guerres, il avait expérimenté, au Gabon le concret du travail missionnaire et la difficulté de la direction d'un champ de mission (SMÉP). Pendant la guerre il eut la délicate mission de défendre l'œuvre des missions protestantes, anglo-saxonnes surtout, auprès du Gouverneur colonial vichyste de Dakar. Ce travail de relation inter-missionnaire lui permit de préparer la fondation de la Fédération des Missions Protestantes d'AOF et du Togo. Il eut ensuite la charge d'une Fédération analogue au Cameroun et en AÉF. La défense des missions protestantes auprès des autorités coloniales françaises était plus que nécessaire du fait de l'implication de nombreux protestants dans les événements qui allaient aboutir à l'indépendence des territoires coloniaux français. Jean Keller a aussi beaucoup œuvré pour accompagner dans ce contexte très troublé, les Églises vers leur accession à l'autonomie. Il a contribué à la mise en place d'outils (collège, faculté de théologie, édition...) leur permettant de mieux remplir leur vocation. Jean Keller eut donc un rôle important dans l'émergence d'un christianisme protestant et africain adulte, qu'il voulait ouvert à la dimension de l'Eglise Universelle. Jean Keller (1900-1993) was a missionary who strove to bring together the different missions and churches in the French-speaking countries of Africa. Between the two World Wars, in Gabon, he had experience of the practical side of missionary work and of the difficulty of managing a mission field (Paris Evangelical Missionary Society: SMEP). During World War II he was entrusted with the difficult task of defending the work of Protestant missions, which were mainly Anglo-Saxon, with the colonial governor representing Vichy France in Dakar. This work in inter-mission relationships enabled him to prepare the founding of the Federation of Protestant Missions in French West Africa and Togo. He was then put in charge of a similar Federation in Cameroon and French Equatorial Africa. Defending Protestant missions with the French colonial authorities was all the more necessary as many Protestants were involved in the events which later led to the independence of the French colonial territories. In this troubled context, he worked greatly to accompany the churches towards autonomy. He contributed to the setting up of facilities (colleges, faculties of theology, publishing services...) which enabled them to fulfil their vocation. Jean Keller therefore played an important part in the rise to adulthood of an African Protestant Christianity, which he wanted to be open to the dimension of the universal Church. Es gelang dem Missionar Jean Keller (1900-1993) die verschiedenen Missionen und Kirchen im französischsprachigen Afrika einander näherzubringen. In der Zeit zwischen den beiden Kriegen hat er in Gabon die konkrete Arbeit des Missionars erlebt sowie die schwierige Aufgabe, ein Missionsgebiet zu leiten (Pariser Evangelische Missionsgesellschaft). Im Krieg bekam er den heiklen Auftrag, das Werk der protestantischen hauptsächlich angelsächsischen Missionen bei dem Vichyvertretenden Gouverneur in Dakar zu verteidigen. Diese Verbindungsrolle zwischen den verschiedenen Missionen erlaubte ihm die Gründung des Vereins der protestantischen Missionen (Fédération des Missions Protestantes) in Westafrika und in Togo vorzubereiten. Später bekam er die Aufgabe einen ähnlichen Verein in Äquatorialafrika und in Kameroun zu gründen. Es war höchst notwendig, die protestantischen Missionen bei der französischen Kolonialverwaltung zu verteidigen, da zahlreiche Protestanten eine wichtige Rolle in den Ereignissen gespielt haben, die zur Unabhängigkeit der französischen Kolonien führen sollten. Jean Keller hat auch sehr viel daran gearbeitet, den Kirchen in diesen unruhigen Zeiten aufdem Weg zu Selbständigkeit zu helfen. Er hat dazu beigetragen, Mitteln zu entwickeln (Schulen, Theologiefakultäten, Verlagshäuser...), die ihnen helfen sollten, ihren Auftrag aufs beste zu erfüllen. Jean Keller hat also bei der Entstehung eines afrikanischen erwachsenen und auf die Universalkirche offenen Protestantismus eine bedeutende Rolle gespielt. | ||
