La plupart de ses écrits théohgiques, publiés en 1770, à titre posthume, à Londres et à Genève, sont de courts commentaires de passages bibliques où Abauzit cherche constamment à contrer la christologie nicéenne ou la doctrine trinitaire orthodoxe ou la conception augustinienne du péché originel. Son christianisme, éclairé par la raison et riche en implications éthiques, ne rejette pas la notion de mystère mais la situe, à l'instar de Toland, dans la source — la révélation — plutôt que dans le contenu dogmatique. Abauzit lived in Geneva from 1689 when he took refuge in the city aged ten. Although a Socinian of some notoriety, he seems to have enjoyed an excellent reputation and was much valued by the local political and religious authorities. Most of his theological writings were published after his death in London and in Geneva in 1770. They consist mainly of short commentaries on biblical passages written with a view to undermining the Nicene christology as well as the orthodox teaching on the Trinity and the Augustinian doctrine of the original sin. Although a Christian rationalist with a pronounced interest in ethics, Abauzit does not reject the idea of mystery but, like Toland, removes it from the dogmatic content of theology to its source, revelation. Abauzit kam zehnjährig als Flüchtling nach Genf, wo er sein Leben verbrachte und das Ansehen der dortigen politischen und kirchlichen Behörden genoβ, obgleich sein Socinianismus sehr wohl öffentlich bekannt war. Der gröβte Teil seiner theologischen Schriften wurde erst nach seinem Tode, im Jahre 1770, in London und in Genf, veröffentlicht. Es handelt sich dabei um kurze Kommentare zu biblischen Stellen, in denen der Autor sich der nicänischen Christologie, der orthodoxen trinitarischen Lehre und der augustinischen Fassung der Erbsünde stets widersetzt. Seine durch die Vernunft erleuchtete Religion, in der die Ethik eine wichtige Rolle spielt, verwirft den Geheimnisbegriff nicht, sondern ordnet ihn, genau so wie Toland, der Offenbarung und nicht der Lehre zu. | ||
