Ce décalage tient à une conjonction de phénomènes : l'Affaire Dreyfus, absolument contemporaine, s'est accompagnée d'une vague d'anti-protestantisme et la prudence a commandé d'éviter toute provocation avec les nationalistes ; l'Édit de Nantes, comme son promoteur, ne sont pas unanimement appréciés par les protestants eux-mêmes (certains voient en 1598 la date consacrant le déclin de h Réforme en France) ; enfin, malgré les efforts des divers courants réformés pour présenter un front uni — ce qui ne s'était vu depuis 1872 — l'originalité commémorative cède le pas à un grand classicisme. Légalisme, patriotisme et sens de la fraternité sont au cœur du débat. Au travers de cette question, il est donc possible d'échirer, non seulement un point de l'historiographie, mais surtout de s'interroger sur la place du protestantisme français dans la société de l'extrême fin du XIXe siècle, tout comme de décéler ce qui peut apparaître comme un point de rupture à l'intérieur même du monde réformé. In 1898, the celebration of the tricentenary of the Edict of Nantes appears to be less intense than in 1885 for the Revocation. This gap can be explain by connected factors : the absolute contemporary Dreyfus' Affair is not only antisemite, but abo anti-protestant ; by the way, french protetsnats had to prevent any provocation towards nationalists. On an other hand the Edict, in itself, and Henry IV, too, did not have a so good reputation (many protestants thought that 1598 buries the firench Reform). At last, despite all its efforts, the divided french protestantism, punctually reunified in 1898, cannot be innovant in celebrations. So, legalism, patriotism et sens of fraternity are at the herta f the debate. Throughout this question, it is possible, not only on an historiographical point to turn the light, but on a wider step to understand which place french protestantism could held in finishing XIXth century. | ||
