Son sort n'a quère été plus heureux auprès des critiques littéraires qui n'ont vu en lui qu'un poème de circonstance. Cette composition mérite pourtant une plus grande attention que celle qu'on lui a jusqu'à nos jours accordée. En effet, d'une part, elle est la preuve manifeste de l'attachement de Buchanan à la doctrine calvinienne à laquelle il s'était rallié bien avant son adhésion officielle à l'Église presbytérienne d'Ecosse. D'autre part, elle est, par son lyrisme prophétique, un parfait spécimen de la poésie militante et biblique qui s'est épanouie dans l'élan de la Réforme. The Epicedium Joannis Calvini, written in 1564, on the year of Calvin's death, by George Buchanan, a Scottish humanist, was concealed during the writer's life : it has been inserted in his Poemata only in 1615 by the publisher Andrew Hart, after a quiet publication in an anthology, published in 1590 in Geneva. In the same way, the critics have seen in it only an occasional poem. This writting, however, is more important than the reactions aroused until these days. Actually, it is on the one hand the real proof of Buchanan's fondness for Calvin's doctrine, which he had joined long before his official adhesion to the Presbyterian Scottish Church. On the other hand, it is by his prophetic lyricism, a perfect example of militant and biblical poetry, which grew up around the Reformation. | ||
