The protestant communitu in Aubais, a village of « garrigues » near Nîmes, very livelu during a long period, is now on the verge of extinction. In spite of its lords' conversion to the new faith, the village split up in the 16th century, the two denominations being equal in number. Small landowners-craftsmen, these protestant country people succeeded in erecting their church whosefe, sometimes troubled, was interrupted by the recovation of the Nantes Edict. On the whole they stayed secretly faithful to the R.P.R. all along the 18th century: Aubais had its prophet, its young « Camisards », and then numerous assemblies in the « Desert ». This long resistance gave birth to a huguenot clan strongly bound together, in front of a slight majority of catholics. During the Revolution these protestants were « patriots » who accepted the worship of Reason and of the Supreme Being, knowing all the while how to benefit from the selling of national property. The distinctive characteristics of these protestants in Aubais have lasted from the 19th century to a great part of the 20th century: republican convictions, theological liberalism, a certain cultural activism. However this community seems doomed to disappear because of the effects — unfavourable for them — of the economic and social evolution. After being a strong minority in the 19th century, this protestant group dangerously dwindled, as far as representing less than 10 % of the present population of the village, and mainly old people. | ||
