Malgré une certaine réserve des pasteurs des Églises réformées et luthériennes, l'appui du christianisme social et l'engagement d'hommes politiques influents au sein de la communauté protestante en faveur d'une législation sur les retraites sont venus convertir les élites protestantes aux bienfaits d'une République dans laquelle l'État prend le relais de la « charité ». L'effort de réflexion mené par les protestants français du début du siècle aura particulièrement contribué à l'acceptation de cette nouvelle donnée sociologique. Should the State act to assist the most helpless? French protestants showed special interest in this issue on the occasion of the passing of the law making workers and farmworkers retirement pensions compulsory in 1910. Despite some reserve on the part of reformed and lutherian clergy, backing from social christiany and influential politicians commitment in favour of retirement legislation converted elite protestants to the positive aspect of a Republic in which the State takes over from « charity ». French protestants thinking at the turn of the century largerly contributed to acceptance of this new sociological value. | ||
