Cette évolution est aussi comparée à ce qui se passe chez les mennonites de France pendant la même période. Cette comparaison montre que les différences importantes entre les protestantismes français et américain ont contribué à produire deux types d'identité mennonite face à la société globale. Pour finir, nous voyons qu'en puisant dans la réalité institutionnelle et théologique protestante américaine, les mennonites ont utilisé ces mêmes éléments pour maintenir une identité anabaptiste distincte et parfois critique à l'égard de la société américaine. E. Troeltsch speaks of a positive relationship between protestant sects and modernity. This article traces the history of Mennonites in the United States of America from the 17th to the 20th century, and examines how a pacifist believers church attempted to maintain a distinct identity apart from American society. This evolution is also compared to what happened among French Mennonites during the same period. The comparaison shows how the different role of protestantism in France and in the U.S.A. contributed to two different kinds of Mennonite identity in relation to global society. While borrowing various elements from American protestant institutional and theological life, Mennonites also used these very elements to maintain a distinctive « Anabaptist » identity which kept a certain critical distance from American society in general. | ||
