Reformators had to supply the new church with French paraphrases of the Psalms, to adapt the repertory to the new ideas and to create melodies and musical settings. Three sources may be distinguished: the extant religious repertory, the existing French chanson and the new melodies composed by protestant musicians. After the first attempts (Strasbourg 1539, 1542...), the official Psalmbook of 1562 contains the 150 Psalms with 125 melodies. From the 16th century up to 1979, texts have been brought up to date, composers have exploited the tunes as a structural principle, and the original melodies are still sung all over the world. | ||
