Description
Summary:Hugo Rahner’s book Der spielende Mensch was published in 1948 and translated into English as Man at Play in 1965. This article interrogates its main ideas from philosophical and theological perspectives, connecting them with the Ignatian tradition. By viewing God as playful, Hugo Rahner offered another of God’s characteristics alongside classical divine attributes, providing, at the same time a more theological perspective on human playfulness than Johan Huizinga did in his book, Homo ludens (1938). After discussing Jürgen Moltmann’s criticism of Rahner’s approach, this article points out that play, in the sense of critique of power-structures in society as well as in the church, is missing in Rahner’s book.
