I contextualize these forms - the exegetical encomium and the exegetical invective - in relation to encomiastic forms in Second Temple literature and, more briefly, in relation to Greek exegesis of Homer. The article also uses these forms to trace the complex history of the homiletical material shared by the two schools of tannaitic midrash, the Akivan and the Ishmaelian.
