In the present paper, we begin an analysis of the (P)riestly and (H)oliness calendars. Building on recent refinements in the delineation of P and H texts in the Pentateuch, we attempt to establish criteria for distinguishing between the P and H layers of the priestly calendrical texts, and to ascertain the relationship between those texts and other sources. The specific topics that we consider here are, 1. the origin of the daily sacrifice, and 2. the development of the Sabbath as a public cultic occasion. | ||
