The comparison of Biblical Hebrew with Aramaic, Arabic, and Rabbinic Hebrew is particularly important for explaining absolute hapax legomena in the Bible. Radak like his predecessors availed himself of may comparisons of Biblical Hebrew with Rabbinic Hebrew and presented many of these comparisons in his Book of Roots (and in his commentaries). We have found that approximately half of his 380 references to Rabbinic Hebrew were already cited by his predecessors (especially Rabbi Jona Ibn Jannach), while the other half represents an original contribution to the vocabulary of Biblical Hebrew explained in the light of Rabbinic Hebrew. This article restricts itself to his comparisons involving absolute hapax legomena in Biblical Hebrew for which recourse to Rabbinic Hebrew is crucial. We are certain that Radak availed himself of Rabbinic Hebrew to make up for the absence of another source available to the Spanish grammarians which he could not use, i.e., comparison with Arabic. | ||
