AB In the martyrdom scene in Antioch in the Acts of Paul and Thecla, two puzzling features occur: Thecla apparently baptizes herself, and the deceased pagan Falconilla is transferred to the realm of the just. This article proposes that the two phenomena may be read together as owing to an interpretation of Paul’s reference to a baptism for the dead (1 Cor 15:29), which formed the generative substructure of the Thecla narrative in this instance.
