Description
Summary:The Martyrdom of Pilate, one of the eight homilies ascribed to Cyriac of Behnessa, is made up of two separate and distinct parts. The first part relates Jesus’ death and passion, His triumph in Hell and His resurrection from the dead. The second part is about Pontius Pilate’s conversion, faith, testimony and subsequent martyrdom, as well as Cesar Tiberius’s conversion following his son’s resurrection. This article is an attempt to provide answers to some of the historical problems linked with this text, such as the true identity of its author, the period he lived in and his Church affiliation. It also proposes a brief study of the many theological questions that appear in The Martyrdom of Pilate. A translation into the French of the carshuni version of this homily belonging to the French National Library (BN Syriac 273, ff 22-47) follows the introduction.
