Accordingly the question is then raised of how feelings and the spirit relate to each other as well as how they are connected to actions. The essay argues that the concept of feelings is closely linked to the modern concept of action, in which it is assumed that actions are induced by reasons, motives or causes. The dimension of the spirit can in contrast only come into focus if one is willing to take a step further back behind such a concept of action and other conceptualisations brought about by it. Spirit appears then as the 'directedness' of a certain behaviour in the form of love, fear etc. The proposition of the essay is that the dimension of the spirit allows for a more fruitful understanding of moral orientation than the concept of feelings does. Thus the regaining of this dimension should not just be a task for theological ethics. | ||
