Descrição
Resumo:Secularism and laicity are terms assumed in the West as fundamental elements of political modernity. The historical process followed by both phenomena to settle in certain nations does not follow a common pattern, much less obey a universal model. Both phenomena occur in very different social milieus and in close connection with this milieu, it happens that in each region of the world secularization and laicity processes have described a different path and the concept itself has acquired its own physiognomy. The aim of the following work is to analyze, how to occur in Cuba, the last American colony of the very Catholic Spain, the transition from confessional society to secular society. In addition, we intend to outline the characteristics that this process acquires in the Caribbean country. Due to the complexity that this process acquires in Cuba from the second half of the twentieth century, the temporal boundaries of this article extend from the beginnings of the colony until the beginning of the Republic.
