| Summary: | This article attempts to answer the question, “What on earth was St Anselm thinking in formulating the ontological argument?” How could one of the great theological minds of the Middle Ages have created an argument that makes freshmen students laugh? Starting from the premise that Anselm must have had something in mind, this paper rigorously—and playfully—attempts to figure out what that something was, discovering, in the process, that contemporary theologians are right when they insist that faith is not a belief about beings, but rather a hermeneutical lens for interpreting what is of ultimate value in the world. |
