Based on a series of lectures given by Peter Brown, the work became part of The Making of Europe series from Blackwell Publishers. This volume underscored Brown's position among the leading scholars of the medieval Church and inspired a vigorous conversation about the concept of Christendom that eschewed accepted definitions attached to the institutional church to focus on the interface of paganism and Christianity, a conversation continued by authors such as Philip Jenkins. Cited in hundreds of publications, The Rise of Western Christendom quickly became a major lens through which to view the medieval world.
