Scholars have tended to emphasize Enlightenment ideas and the political realities that made separation practical and possible. Because the American colonies were so religiously pluralistic by the end of the colonial period that no single faith could assert hegemony, disestablishment became a practical means of preventing endless interreligious conflicts.
