Therefore, his book offers “a study in applied sacred political theory” (p. 4). The application is to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Puritanism in England and North America. He argues that scholars have not adequately appreciated that radical Puritanism's concern with the danger of tyranny applied as fully to state as to church. Further, separatism's role in this Puritan story has been invisible because scholars have seen Puritans as exclusively sectarian, with no concerns for the larger society.
