Philosophical interest was aroused through the work of John Rawls, whose scholarship casts a long shadow and is much discussed in this volume. Many feel that private religious belief should not expect to claim attention in the public sphere, as its assumptions will not be shared by everyone in societies that have grown more pluralist. The problem for believers is how they can join in public debate about public policy, concerning such issues as euthanasia, without bringing the assumptions of their faith into play or without forfeiting their right to be heard by those outside their faith.
