This convergence, however, is most frequently associated by scholars with studies of the role of British Protestant missions in the British empire and is often interpreted as an inevitable and highly regrettable by-product of the overflow of the ascendant nationalism characteristic of high modernity into the sphere of religion. The significance of Ian Tyrrell's book is that it puts both of these assumptions into question.
