520 |a Billy Graham's detractors knew from the start that he was an important political figure. Of course, different groups of critics had different complaints: fundamentalists objected that Graham compromised on doctrine to expand his network of religious supporters and often associated with political figures of dubious orthodoxy. Political and religious liberals attacked his “simplistic” theology, anti-communist rhetoric, and conservative political views. Segregationists condemned his emerging racial egalitarianism, while civil rights leaders complained that he failed to support critical legislative action. But none of his critics—or his supporters—ever thought that the “pastor to presidents” did not matter politically.
