Political and religious liberals attacked his “simplistic” theology, anti-communist rhetoric, and conservative political views. Segregationists condemned his emerging racial egalitarianism, while civil rights leaders complained that he failed to support critical legislative action. But none of his critics—or his supporters—ever thought that the “pastor to presidents” did not matter politically. | ||
