Aḥmad Fāris al-Shidyāq's simplified grammar of the Arabic language known as Ghunyat al-ṭālib provoked Saʿīd al-Shartūnīʾs refutation, al-Sahm al-ṣāʾib . This work subsequently prompted two counter-refutations in al-Shidyāq's defence by Yūsuf al-Asīr and Ibrāhīm al-Aḥdab. One of the most significant aspects of this controversy is that scholars have been searching for a solution to the issues it raised up to the present day. Based on an extensive study of original sources, this article sheds light on some of the underlying factors prompting al-Shartūnī's refutation and his position as a grammarian. The article also examines the counter-refutations offered by al-Asīr and al-Aḥdab in order to provide a fuller picture of the linguistic debate in the nahḍa . | ||
