| Riepilogo: | This article investigates the nature of the support that the anṣār showed towards ʿAlī and Muḥammad respectively, and whether it could in either case have been based on kinship. In particular, it considers whether the anṣār were likely to have supported ʿAlī for the succession at the death of Muḥammad, and if so, whether their support for him would have been based on their kinship to him. The article argues that kinship could not have been a factor in the support that the anṣār showed towards Muḥammad at the time of his move to Yathrib, and could not have motivated the anṣār in favour of ʿAlī at the time of the death of Muḥammad. It maintains instead that the anṣār's later affinity towards ʿAlī stemmed from their worsening circumstances over the period of the early caliphate, and from the feelings of frustration and alienation they came to share with him. |
