To gain a fuller picture it was found necessary to peruse the minutes of University committee meetings where the Journal was discussed, and to record the personal recollections of those committee members who still survive and who were responsible for its management. The inauguration of this new Journal, which was international in scope, also needs to be set against the background of earlier attempts to publish research in the area of Semitic studies, not only in Manchester but also wider afield. Some of these attempts are not well known for they came to nought. Information is provided here about the leading personalities involved with JSS as editors and advisors, as well as the reasons behind the various changes of publisher and printer. The background to the series of monographs and supplements, which have always been associated with the Journal, is also described. What follows is an abbreviated version of a longer report, which it is hoped to publish in full in the near future.
