Description
Summary:This book ends where Bird's Jesus and the Origins of Gentile Mission (2006) began and seeks to evaluate the evidence for Jewish mission among Gentiles in the Second Temple period, with particular interest in its relationship to the emergence of early Christian missionary efforts., A preliminary chapter pays due attention to issues of terminology concerning ‘mission’ and ‘conversion’. Bird recognizes that conclusions as to the extent of missionary activity in this period vary depending on how ‘mission’ is defined (pp. 7, 150). ‘Mission’ is understood here as ‘the diverse array of activities that consciously attempts to draw, recruit or persuade persons into conversion consisting of ideological, axiological (ethical), and social transformation’ (p. 43).
