Doubts about the authenticity of the letter were articulated early on (e.g. by Q. Quesnell), and since Morton Smith's death in 1991 these doubts have grown rather than diminished. In this book, Stephen Carlson deploys his forensic skills to the full (he is a practising lawyer) to argue the case that the letter is a modern hoax, created and written by Morton Smith himself., Carlson develops his case, building on previous critiques, with impressive detail. He argues that the writing of the manuscript seems to betray signs of being a modern forgery.
