Summary: | Professor Kenney describes his latest book as a prequel to his previously published The Mysticism of Saint Augustine: Rereading the Confessions. In that work Kenney was concerned to recover a theological, and thus more authentic, reading of Augustine's accounts of contemplation in the Confessions, against the trend of treating those accounts as examples of a so-called common-core mystical experience. In his latest essay, he turns his attention to Augustine's accounts of contemplation in his early works, tracing his developing theology and amplifying to great effect the accounts in the Confessions. |
