Riepilogo:This new ‘intellectual biography’ aims to set out the fundamental convictions that stamp the thought and so the writings of St Augustine. It pays scant attention to most details of his life, especially to his later life as a bishop, nor does it chart the intricate developments in his philosophical and theological thinking that are often noted and disputed by scholars. Instead, it presents Augustine as ‘one of the world's great novelists’, because he is concerned with ‘the single story that is contained within every human story’ (p. ix), and which is that of our human plight, caught in error and failings, but drawn to a truth and happiness that repeatedly elude us, save by the grace of God.
