总结:This is an important and exciting contribution to the scholarly conversation on Evagrius. It ably takes into account the major directions and interpreters of Evagrius in the last decades; it builds on these, criticizes some, and offers several bold new proposals for consideration. The work is divided into two main parts. The first part, ‘Evagrius Ponticus in ecclesiastical history’, deals in successive chapters with Evagrius’ life, writings, and reputation. The treatment of his life and writings in the first two chapters does not bring much that is new to the conversation, but Casiday's writing here—as throughout—is clear and often elegant. One reads him with pleasure.
