This careful and perceptive study investigates the likely and specifically Pythagorean sources of The Sentences of Sextus (sources found chiefly in Clitarchus and The Pythagorean Sentences). Sextus is here read as a Christian ‘apologetically’ marrying admired traditional philosophical ideals of disciplined restraint and self-sufficiency with emergent second-century Christian faith and insights in various surviving texts.
