It presents an in-depth examination of several cases of ‘disfigurement’ found in biblical texts, namely circumcision; disfigurements related to talionic law, including the cutting off of the woman's ‘palm’ in Deut. 25:11–12; and the piercing of a slave's ear to mark slavery in perpetuity in Exod. 21:6 and Deut. 15:16., The book begins with a fairly lengthy introduction that focuses upon methodological issues having to do with biblical law, for example identifying the precise nature of cuneiform law and the relationship between biblical and cuneiform legal materials.
