Description
Summary:The impact of Schleiermacher’s Speeches both on the development of modern theology and on broader culture is well known. The extent to which the text, in its various editions, reveals key points in Schleiermacher’s own intellectual development is also common knowledge, at least amongst Schleiermacher specialists and historians of Christian theology. This new publication of the German text of the Speeches provides a readily accessible version of the first three editions of the work (1799, 1806, and 1821) and, in so doing, raises important questions for interpreters of Schleiermacher’s work. Whether scholars access the Speeches through German or English versions of the work, the question arises as to ‘which Schleiermacher’ they may have been introduced to, or influenced by.
