On the British cover, a clothed Christ is holding and blessing a nude child (Cranach the Elder, 1535), a playful riposte to the Reformed penchant for the ‘naked’ Christ and the ‘naked’ immaterial truth. Harwood attempts to show how the Reformers’ preference for minimalistic ‘truth’ and ‘simplicity’ in worship came to resemble the philosophical consciousness they abhorred in the philosophers, and which paved the way for the triumph of the Enlightenment.
