Summary: | The title of this book might mislead one to expect an edition of the approximately 90 extant letters of St Ambrose, whereas in fact the volume, dedicated to the memory of Yves-Marie Duval, contains a series of papers in French and Italian produced in connection with a colloquium held in 2009 at Saint-Étienne and Lyon, under the auspices of the Sources chrétiennes, to discuss questions relevant to a proposed edition of Ambrose’s correspondence in the Sources chrétiennes series. If the title is misleading, the layout and supplementary information frequently lack clarity, to the point where the reader might feel that this volume, largely concerned with the apparently confused order of Ambrose’s letters as transmitted in most manuscripts, mirrors the problems of its subject all too closely. |
