This is an adaptation of a Ph.D. thesis on the Hebrew Bible from Union Institute and University. Unlike many publications of doctorates, Janet Smith’s is mostly free of jargon, and there are various contemporary illustrations to show how an ancient text like Psalm 49 has a present-day significance....

Unlike many publications of doctorates, Janet Smith’s is mostly free of jargon, and there are various contemporary illustrations to show how an ancient text like Psalm 49 has a present-day significance. She has achieved an impressive breadth of reading, not only in the secondary literature of the Psalter and the related parts of the Hebrew Bible, but also in the relevant scholarly works about Egypt and the ancient Near East., However, this is not an easy book to review. Although Smith offers engaging insights, many of which are compelling, the chapters (particularly the first ones) are peppered with small errors, too many repetitions, various non sequiturs, and puzzling inconsistencies.
