AB This study, a slightly revised version of the author’s Ph.D. thesis submitted to Fuller Theological Seminary, focuses on the Jesus tradition in the writings of the Apostolic Fathers (AFs), raising in particular the question of the origin of this tradition and its possible relation to that which appears in the (now canonical) gospels. Young’s conclusion is that the AFs do not depend on the canonical gospels: rather the traditions common to the gospels and the AFs are best explained by dependence on common oral traditions.
