If the answer is the former, were their origins religious, viz. traceable to the creation of a separate ecclesiastical entity that would later be known as the Syriac Orthodox church? This volume, edited by Bas ter Haar Romeny, presents the fruits of a Leiden University-based research project funded by a PIONIER grant from the Netherlands Organisation of Scientific Research (NWO), entitled The Formation of a Communal Identity among West Syrian Christians (451–1300), which reached its conclusion in 2009. The chapters began life as conference papers presented in a symposium held at Oud Poelgeest castle near Leiden in 2007.
