This study on Chrysostom’s attitude to the theatre does not trek down the well-worn paths. Indeed, in many respects this study by Christoph Jacob is remarkable. For one thing, he has tapped into the rhetorical genius of John Chrysostom to present, coherently and cogently, Chrysostom’s pastoral answer to what he perceived to be a major peril that threatened the spiritual and moral life of his people. That answer was the ‘spiritual theatre’—the great drama of redemption as lived out in the hearts, minds, and actions of God’s people, both past and present. This study is also remarkable for its attention to detail. | ||
