| Resumo: | Scholars of early modern Europe will welcome this nuanced and carefully researched account of the Reuchlin affair. David Price's thorough understanding of the political and intellectual currents of the time allows him to bring together the various factors determining the course of the campaign to destroy Hebrew books and the inquisition into Reuchlin's alleged Judaism. Conversely, Price uses Reuchlin's life and career as a prism to reflect the position of Jews in the German Empire., After briefly discussing the modern literature on Reuchlin (ch. 1), he begins his enquiry by examining the role humanism played in shaping Reuchlin's interests and the skills he developed to pursue them (ch. 2). |
