520 |a In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, biblical scholars were increasingly interested in Jewish writings dating from the period in which Jesus lived and Christianity came into existence. These writings, most of which had not been adopted into the European biblical canons, were supposed to contain valuable information about the context of the Jesus movement and the early church. A growing awareness that the origins of Christianity were historical as much as metaphysical in nature instigated many scholars to try and reconstruct the world in which Jesus had lived: Jewish Palestine of the first century—its history, beliefs, and practices. To be able do so, these scholars needed sources—preferably, in that age, literary sources.
