Summary:In this instructive monograph, Thomas E. Phillips (Professor of New Testament and Early Christian Studies at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego) provides a detailed ‘comparison of the Paul of the letters and the Paul of Acts’ (p. 42). The first two chapters convincingly demonstrate the need and set the stage for Phillips's endeavour. Chapter 1 (pp. 5–29) compares two seminal Pauline studies that both appeared in 2004, Bruce Chilton's Rabbi Paul and John Dominic Crossan and Jonathan Reed's In Search of Paul, with the result that they present a Paul who ‘leans towards Acts’ (p. 27) and ‘leans away from Acts’ (p. 28) respectively.
