Summary:Thomas Tobin is, in the old cliché, a ‘scholar and a gentleman’, and the eminent contributors to this richly merited Festschrift pay appropriate homage to his work on the Jewish and Christian communities who were seeking to find a voice in an age different from one that they had previously known (and will therefore repay reading in our own ‘age of transition’). Reviewing such a collection is almost impossible, since it is in the nature of the genre that there is no sustained argument; let me point, however, to some of the themes that emerge.
