Old Testament scholars of the late nineteenth century, who worked in an intellectual world shaped by social Darwinism, produced quite different results from scholars confronted by the National Socialist demands that Hebrew and the Old Testament should be banished from German universities. Again, scholars responding to the women’s and liberation movements of the 1970s and 1980s produced results that engaged with the quite new concerns that these movements had highlighted.
